Welcome to the Chorley Trades Council campaigns information page. We aim to raise awareness of a wide and varied range of Trades Union issues relevant to the local community.
Below is a brief summary of the issues we have addressed over the last 2 years:
NHS Campaign - no to privatisation and competition - We are working closely with the LATUC to raise awareness of the increasing levels of outsourcing of services within the NHS.
Defend Council Housing - From October 2005 until the tenants vote in July 2006, we ran a campaign against the transfer of council housing stock to Chorley Community Housing . We believe that we were successful in presenting the Trades Union perspective on stock transfer to Chorley Council tenants. The majority of tenants were not convinced by our argument and voted for stock transfer.
Yes 63.1%, No 36.9% on a 69.6% turnout.
World Poverty - With assistance from Amicus, we took part in the Make Poverty History March, attended by more than 2500,000 like minded individuals, in Edinburgh, on 2nd July 2005. We believe that this action directly influenced the decisions of policy makers at the G8 Summit, taking place at this time. We were joined by visiting trades unionists from the German IG Metall union.
Observing the annual Workers Memorial Day - Amicus organized a march from the park gates to the Memorial Garden in Astley Park, which was followed by a short service to remember those workers killed or injured in the course of their employment.
Rail Against Privatization - Representatives attended a march and public meeting in Manchester supporting a public owned railway.
Halting the decline in manufacturing jobs - We attended rallies in Burnley and Manchester to highlight the continuing decline in manufacturing employment. We have also raised awareness of this issue through press coverage in local newspapers.
Workplace Development & Skills for Life - In a joint venture with Preston Trades Council, we developed a drop in day at Runshaw College, to bring together workers and vocational training providers.
