CAMPAIGN FOR DECENT PENSIONS

Friday 1 August 2008, 12.00 – 14.00

Albert Square, Manchester

On 1 August 1908 the first Old Age Pensions Act became law

But over the years the state pension has not reflected the growth in our national wealth, and as a percentage of average earnings it has continued to decrease. As a result, the majority of today’s older generation now struggle to make ends meet.

This rally is part of year-long campaign, launched by the National Pensioners Convention to pay tribute to those original pension pioneers and call for an increase in today's state pension.

The Pension Centenary Campaign demands that the government raise the basic state pension as a matter of urgency to at least £134 a week (official poverty level) for all pensioners and increase it annually in line with earnings or prices (whichever is the greater).

At our last AGM it was decided to convene a Labour & Trade Union Special Meeting on 14th September 2007 to consider the formation of a Political Sub-Committee. This meeting was well supported and the proposal was unanimously agreed. We have created a separate page within the News section of our site, to report the activities of this Sub-Committee, which can be accessed from the menu tabs on the left of this page or by clicking here.

Dear Colleagues,

WORKERS MEMORIAL DAY 2007

In over 40 countries in the world each year April 28th is the day that trade unions and Workplace Health and Safety advocates observe a day of remembrance known as Workers Memorial day.

Workers Memorial Day is the day we mourn for the dead, but fight for the living.

  • World wide two million people are killed at work each year- more than by war or AIDS
  • UK, official HSE figure (2005-06) say: 212 people killed at work but this is only the number of employees and self-employed, to that must be added 384 members of the public, about 1,000 people killed in work-related traffic accidents, or at sea and others not counted.
  • Therefore the real figure is about 1,600-1,700 killed in work related incidents each year.
  • Plus thousands killed by occupational illness.
  • 70% of deaths and serious injuries due to management health & safety failures.
  • Only 7 companies convicted of corporate manslaughter & about 20 employers/directors EVER convicted for killing at work- all from small companies

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE JUSTICE TO YOU?

Sadly, In Chorley we have recently suffered deaths from workplace incidents.

Amicus in Chorley organised a commemoration service and town centre event.

A service in Astley Park on April 27th and a town centre information stall on Saturday 28th which were well supported

Around 20 Amicus activists demonstrated on Preston Flag Market, on Saturday 20th, January to highlight the loss of thousands of manufacturing jobs in the Northwest.

Despite the freezing cold weather, members of the public gave us a warm reception with hundreds signing our petition.

Privatisation of Chorley Market

Following the success of the anti-privatisation campaign run by Chorley Market traders, with the support of the Trades Council amongst many others. The Council has reconsidered its position on Group Gerard, after being presented with a petition of over 10,000 signatures from individuals opposing external management of the markets. Its ironic that it took the Conservatives to reverse a decision taken when Labour were in control of the Council.

Too Young to Die

Chorley & District Trades Council are shocked at the latest figures which reveal the real dangers facing young people entering the world of work.

In Britain, a worker aged between 16 and 24 years of age suffers a reported workplace injury requiring 3 days off work every 12 minutes of the working day. A young worker is seriously injured at work every 40 minutes. Workplace fatalities in the 16-24 age range occur at a rate of more than one a month.

Figures for fatal and major injuries to employees age 16 to 24 as reported to all enforcing authorities are worsening.

A survey carried out by the TUC suggest many employers are doing little to protect our young workers, despite clear legal duties on employers the survey found 37% of 15 to 24 year olds had received no health and safety training.

Steve Turner (Secretary) said, ‘these figures are shocking, clearly we need to strengthen legislation and make sure that those responsible for safety crimes are dealt with severely’.

We believe that workplaces that have trade union representation are safer places to work, by working with good employers we can reduce the risks, make sure that quality training is provided and on going health & safety education is delivered.

We would encourage young people to join a trade union, for further information about, or how to join, trade unions please contact us.
