Unions Slam Housing Betrayal

Anyone interested in protecting public assets and the protection of vulnerable people will know that the Council Homes Transfer from a democratically elected council to an owner, (Chorley Community Housing) who would face little or no accountability would leave the future of those that work for this organisation or live in their properties insecure. For this insecurity to arise so quickly is a little surprising even for people from the Trade Union Movement who follow these public policy issues closely.

We don’t know the details of the changes but if we were to hazard a guess it will probably mean handing over more control of homes to a more remote and less accountable body, the terms and conditions for those employed will be changed and eventually eroded. In the long term local jobs and service will ebb out of our town as CCH is finally absorbed, tenants will have to pay through rents and service changes for these ill thought out decisions. Decisions directed by Steve Lomas, Managing Director of CCH who instead of walking away from this, he should be standing up for and defending those workers and tenants who must feel a sense of betrayal from his leaving. If you are a tenant you need to be very concerned about these changes because sooner or later they will impact on your tenancy.

The policy of Chorley Trade Union council is still to work for a mixture of provision in housing in both the public and private sectors. We would like to see these properties brought back into public ownership with democratic accountability for tenants with the same conditions these private companies are given. We believe that once this is done then a massive house building programme should take place to ensure people who need homes can acquire them.

In our town and nationally we are on the brink of a housing crisis, a crisis that is the outcome of promoting and perpetuating greed from banking institutions, ironically we will need more rented accommodation to deal with the fallout of these policies.

Markets Privatisation

Dear Editor,

At last someone in favour of public ownership and control and the retention of our assets for the general well being of us all. It does feel a little strange from our point of view that its come from the ultimate privatising party, the Conservatives, who are the architects of the privatisation of most of our assets in the name of profit maximisation.

What is even more ironic is that the privatisation policies of privatising the Market by the Labour party have been overturned by the Conservatives, we at Chorley Trades Union Council thought we would never see the day but we now have evidence that wonders never cease. What isn’t a wonder is how confusing this inconsistency must be for the people of our town; this does really turn politics on its head. We at Chorley Trade Union Council think this new found belief of the Conservatives will be short lived, only recently they supported other privatisation’s without hesitation, privatisation’s originally set up by Labour.

If people want a consistent view on the protection our collective assets they need look no further than the Trade Union movement. We were against the privatisation of Rail, Water, Electricity, Gas and many other aspects of a decent society including Public Housing and the National Health Service. Our Services are being privatised by Labour before our eyes and like the Market Traders who have championed their cause we need to tell our politicians of all political colours that enough is enough and we want humanity put before profit every time.

In the New Year we will be stepping up our campaign to prevent the Stealth Privatisation of the National Health Service. If you would like to join us in our endeavours then please feel free.

Yours sincerely,

Steve Turner (Secretary)
