Workers’ Memorial Day

in Astley Park at the Memorial Tree (near the War Memorial)

 

Most people know about Remembrance Sunday. We remember millions who have died because of war. In April each year an increasing number of people observe Workers Memorial Day. It is the day, which commemorates the two million or more workers who die each year through work-related accidents and disease.

 

AN INTERFAITH CEREMONY

for those who have died in work related incidents

 

(A march will have taken place from Astley Park gates to the Memorial Tree.)

 

At the Park those taking part in the ceremony will stand in front of the tree and face the people who have gathered at the Memorial Tree.

 

Rector  “Welcome to this ceremony to commemorate those who have died whilst at work. At intervals throughout this ceremony you will hear the following phrases said at regular intervals. “Remember the dead” to which we invite you to respond with “Fight for the living”

 

We thank UNITE for arranging this ceremony and I introduce the local secretary to Welcome you and our guests.

 

The Secretary of Chorley UNITE Mr Steven Turner will speak

 

At the conclusion of his welcome the Secretary will say 

 “Remember the dead”

       All “Fight for the living.”

 

The Secretary will invite Mr Ben Stedder Thompson’s Trades Union Solicitor to speak

At the conclusion of his speech the Solicitor will say 

 “Remember the dead”

       All “Fight for the living.”

 

 

The Secretary will invite Laurence Faircloth, Regional Secretary of UNITE to speak

At the conclusion of his speech the Regional Secretary will say 

 “Remember the dead”

       All “Fight for the living.”

 

The Secretary will invite the Rt Hon Lindsay Hoyle MP to speak

At the conclusion of his speech the MP will say 

 “Remember the dead”

       All “Fight for the living.”

 

Commendation Ceremony

 

Rector  “A representative from Churches Together in Chorley will read a verse from the Holy Bible”

ending with “Remember the dead”

       All “Fight for the living.”

 

Rector  “A representative of the Moslem community will read a verse from the Quaran”

ending with “Remember the dead”

        All “Fight for the living.”

 

Rector “A representative from the Chorley Faiths Council representing the other religious faiths of Chorley Borough will read an appropriate text.”  

ending with “Remember the dead”

       All “Fight for the living.”

  • Wreath Laying

The Rector will invite Ms Linzi Herbertson from FACK to speak

Ms Herbertson will concludes with the words 

 “Remember the dead”

       All “Fight for the living.”

 

Rector  “And now, whilst a piper plays a Scottish lament I invite Ms Herbertson to lay the first wreath at the Memorial Tree on behalf of those who have lost relatives through death at work.

 

Following her, our Mayor as chief citizen will lay the wreath followed by our MP, Union representatives, and then all others who have brought wreaths are invited to place them at the Memorial Tree ”

(The dignitaries who are gathered symbolically lay wreaths at the tree)

 

A Piper plays a Scottish lament.

 

Rector “May all who have died at work rest in peace.

May God protect all workers and those who employ them and keep them always mindful of their responsibility to each other.

May all who work, do so in safety, for the good of every individual, and for the well being of society.
